Going With The Flow – Brent & Casey

There is no set mold for love, just like there is no set mold for a wedding. I’ve had friends ask me, “don’t you get bored of taking pictures at weddings, isn’t it the same thing again and again”? To this I simply reply, absolutely not! I love weddings because every couple is different. The way they love is different. Who they are together is different. Hence, every wedding is different!

The majority of weddings have the same basic structure: get ready, get married, get your party on, but every wedding has different styles. Brent and Casey’s style was lower key. They wanted a simple outdoor wedding in their backyard with the reception immediately following. It was perfect. Even when the ceremony started and the heavens opened into a downpour, none of that mattered, because they were content with the moment. The guests just simply picked up their chairs and moved into the tent, where the bridal party made their second entrance and started the ceremony all over again.

“Go with the flow” is how I always work on a wedding day or even a portrait session for that matter. I am a very well organized photographer and I plan my weddings and portrait sessions well, but because every client is different and uncontrollable moments just happen in life, I adapt. I take pride in running a business that captures the most memorable moments in my client’s lives. And I know that making “it” work, whatever the “it” may be comes with the territory. I am a photographer. It is what I do. I love it.

These flowers were amazing! Heavy though. Casey’s had some strong arms to hold these!

An Adventure In New York City

Fall is fast approaching. With this, kids return to school, leaves start to change colour and float magically through the breeze, and wedding season slows down, at least for me this year. You see, I tend to be a very organized person, both in my business and personal life. This is why wedding photography works so well for me. I am able plan for events a year in advance because my schedule is laid out that far. I like organized planning and seamless execution. This is how I function. So I planned my wedding season to be this way. This fall I am entering into my last semester of my business diploma, a one and a half year condensed program at the Algonquin College and to me it just made more sense to focus my attention solely on my education and applying that to my business. I do, however, have one more wedding, which will be in Antigua in November. My first destination wedding and I can say with confidence, not my last.

This year has been quite busy for me. I have travelled to Alaska (pictures coming eventually) with friends on a cruise ship and spent seven days lounging and exploring. I flew out to British Columbia and spent a week in the mountains (again, pictures coming eventually). But my first real travelling of the year was Easter weekend, when I travelled to New York City. While I was there I shot an engagement session in Central Park and was able to tour around the city a bit, though it was a bit too cold for my likings, here is a few frames my icy blue hands were able to capture.

The walk started from the bus station… couldn’t tell you where I was at this point!

At this point I was like a kid on Christmas morning who discovered the best present in the world! For those who do not know, I love fashion.

I also captured all the stones I could with designers on them, but thought it would be a bit much to add them all here.

Taken at Ground Zero. This bike was in the 9/11 memorial museum. The intense feeling surrounding this room was overwhelming.

There was so many people everywhere! Time square was crazy when we went the night before and The Bull was just as crazy!

I would just like to point out the trees on the building. I guess there is not much room in the city for a lot of greenery, so putting trees on buildings is a normal practice?

Fun Photography – Keara & Shelagh

I met Brandy a couple years back now, she was one of the bridesmaids in a wedding I captured and she had a big interest in starting her own photography business. Fast forward to this past summer, I ran into the bride from the wedding that Brandy was standing in at another wedding and we got to chatting about photography and business. She had mentioned that Brandy was pursuing her dream of becoming a professional photographer. So, I naturally told her to get Brandy to contact me so we can shot together and I could maybe help her out a bit! Lord knows I would have loved if someone helped me out in my beginning stages! So that is exactly what we did.

In the middle of August I travelled down to Ottawa for a fun portrait session in a park with two very energetic teenage girls. I helped guide and give tips, answered questions and helped relieve some of the anxiety of the very daunting task of being in charge of a portrait session. While Brandy was capturing images, I strapped on my 70-200mm, because I decided that I need to use it more often, and snapped a couple pictures as well.

For those aspiring photographers looking for guidance and wisdom, just ask! Sure, you may be rejected, but you may also find a photographer like me who is willing to help out! Below are a few of the random shots I got while on location. Enjoy and Happy Friday!

Rain Is Good Luck – Justin & Amanda

Justin and Amanda got married on a rainy afternoon at the Renfrew Golf Club. I met Justin at his parents house for a little pre-wedding picture taking first thing in the morning, where him and his groomsmen endured a light sprinkle. Then I moved on to Amanda’s house and captured the details and getting ready shots. Luckily, when the girls and I arrived at our pre-wedding picture taking destination, which was a beautiful park in Renfrew, the rain disappeared and it was nothing but blue skies.

After the ceremony there was an hour for family pictures, followed by the bridal party entrance to a beautifully decorated room at the golf course. While dinner was being served, speeches were make by the parents, best man and maid of honour, followed by the cake cutting and Justin and Amanda’s speeches. Once all the formalities were out of the way, the bridal party and I hopped in a few golf carts to go have fun! Unfortunately for us, the rain had started again, so keep in mind when looking through the bride, groom and wedding party pictures that they are standing in the rain, as am I.

All said and done, once the garter and bouquet were tossed, the evening was done for me. I drove home to Petawawa in one of the worst rain storms I have driven in, nearly meeting the ditch on more than one occasion. But I made it home safe and sound, and here is what I have to show for a rainy wedding day! You’ve got to make the most of what a wedding day throws at you… and this wedding’s only challenge seemed to be the rain, but we survived just fine.

I would just like to note that this is the way the sky looked… I did not change it in any way or saturate it to make it look like this… it was just naturally beautiful!!! In camera :)

This was taken on a different part of the course from the above sunset pictures… we tried to capture the bright pink sky before it went down… absolutely stunning!

Congratulations Justin and Amanda. You are a wonderful couple and I am so happy for you!

Rain, Rain, Go Away – Jarrad & Rhea

Jarrad and Rhea said “i do” amongst family and friends on August 13, 2011. I, being the lucky photographer, got to capture these two magnificent people in the great outdoors and was given free range to play and use my imagination! So, with this very exciting task in mind, I drove to the ceremony location, fingers crossed that the rain would stop in time for pictures. And it did. Just in time!
